Cultural Tours

Dive into the Xhosa culture! Our local guides are excited to show you their village and to let you get a glimpse of their lives. They will take you on a village tour, to a traditional herbalist or give you an insight on how the women specifically live their lifes in the Nquileni village.

Learn about Xhosa culture and traditions

Village Tour

Come experience the village life in our vibrant community, and learn about our culture and traditions! This tour is an authentic immersion in our village’s life, meaning that each tour is unique. You may be visiting the sangoma; stop at the shebeen to have a few drinks with the merry old folk who will ask you questions like: «how many cows you pay for your
wife in your country?»; maybe join a village party/wedding/feast… There is no telling what will happens, but in any case you might come away with a new sense of what a ‘real community’ is… something that has often been lost in Western societies. Or maybe you will just have a laugh and come stumbling back after testing a few of our xhosa beers!

Women Power Tour

You will learn to carry water on your head, go to the forest to collect firewood and prepare a delicious traditional lunch. While the pots simmers, you get involved in whatever activity happens that day: making mud bricks, hewing the maize field, redunging the floor… or just chatting over a drink at the shebeen.
Guys are more than welcome to join! – Seeing men carry water and firewook will do wonder for gender equality in our community!

Visit a traditional herbalist

Learn more about the healing properties of local roots, leaves, barks and berries by visiting Meldinga, an experienced herbalist. He will show you his house filled with medicines and share with you his extensive knowledge. You will then take a walk in an ancient forest, where he sources his remedies.

Get a relaxing massage

Treat your body, mind and spirit to a Bulungula massage. Akhona Sinoni, our wonderful massage therapist, will help you unwind, relax and reset in the comfort of your room, with the natural soothing sounds of the Indian Ocean and forest birds – no soundtrack necessary.

Learn how to drum

On many evenings after dinner there is drumming around the fire led by our talented neighbour Lwando. He offers drumming lessons on the beach or in the forest. Beginners welcome!
